Deflection redux
This is the renewed deflector shield standing tall on our front path. I particularly like the glass of water sitting in the crotch of the two stumps. Light moves through it. Eventually something a little more permanent will be constructed for this spot, or not. Who knows the mythic motion of this land's mind?

I am reminded of the rock-pile cairns one seen around Hawaii, or on trails to mark the turns -- only yours is much more scupltural and texturally intriguing. Having never lived at the end of a cul-de-sac as you've described, I'm not familiar with the feeling of everything "coming at you" down the street, but for nosey me it would seem an ideal vantage point to keep tabs on everyone else's comings and goings. I'd be the one crouched down behind the deflector shield and peeking through the aperture to spy on all the neighbors!
Coming from almost two decades in the country, I'm a little sensitive to the attentions of my neighbors (or lack there of). My first impulse is to erect the stockade, and man the loopholes until I'm the only one left standing on the block! Al tempers these antisocial impulses of mine. The concept we developed together around the deflector shield is more personable than my initial impulse would have it: to deflect mischief and allow benevolence. Al rightly pointed out that good things come through the same porthole as well as "bad." Blocking everything out is isolating, and our intention is engagement with our environment in a good way. There is just so much that randomly "comes down the road," an active filter is called for, hence the Deflector Shield.
I always find it interesting to discover when the shield is disrupted. For example, last night I walked out and discovered that the water glass was on the ground and several feathers had been cast about - pulled out of their places. Is this evidence of the shield working hard on our behalf? Or, was there a cat playing on the construction? I choose to believe the former. And that speaks volumes about me...

The gate looks similar to the one on Vashon, and fabulous. I love the fence. And yes, I think both would attract my attention.
Thank you Susan, Al says he drives the long way home now so he can admire his work all the way down 11th. I think he surprised himself. thats always a good thing.
