18 weeks: chick meets dog!

Well, its eighteen weeks since the girls (and at least one boy) hatched out. Time for bird to meet dog!

We unveiled the front of the chicken run so everyone could see and be seen. Pretty anticlimactic if ya ask me.

The birds were very interested in the view, and the additional feeding possibilities.

Elmo sniffed and was sniffed in turn.

Emma wanted the birds to run around, but no one paid her any mind.

The silkie in front with the fancy neck feathers has begun to crow! So, we have at least one roo. Not sure what we'll do with him. He's very pretty and the silkies are so fun, but we are kinda on the down low and can't afford any neighborhood complaints. Fortunately its summer and we have a little time.

Here's a picture of the July garden. We've been eating the harvest since I got back mid June. We thinned the beets and had a great beet green stir fry. The potatoes are growing lavishly. The beans are being a little pokey. The peas were lovely and sweet, but not enough of them.
Anyway, learning what grows...

House finches visiting the feeder - our most common visitor.

Hello silkie babies from your mother, Sweetie, the little grey silkie who laid your egg! I hear one of you young ones is starting to crow! You know, we do have that same *issue* over here in East Albuquerque, the neighbors just don't seem to appreciate the early morning wake-up call. They even had the audacity to call animal control which promptly sent me a form letter about the "barking" complaint. Hello! We don't have a dog! I talked to the neighbors who were complaining and they agreed that if we could keep our fuzzy alarm clock quiet until 10:00 a.m. they wouldn't complain any more. So I thought I'd share with you the solution we came up to keep our little white roo who is our very favorite. Every evening when the chickies go to bed we take a small rubbermaid container (about 18X12X12 or so) and we simply cover the little roo with it until 10:00 a.m. When we uncover him in the morning he then starts to crow. Keeping him in the dark mostly keeps him quiet, and if he does crow under there (which is very rare) it is quite muffled.

Your babies are so so so cute, thank you so much for posting pictures of them! I will e-mail you a picture of their momma you can show them so they will know where they came from!!! Stephanie from Albuquerque

Birdie's nice mention of you two over at her place today reminded me that I haven't stopped by here for a while. Looks like the great chicken enterprise is coming along rally well!

I say spare the rooster and eat cake.
Your last birthday cake was seriously raved about. Virginia the birthday girl/cake genius says, "Texture outstanding: moist, light and very flavorful." Once again, you surpassed New Mexico birthday cake expectations. Praise the Lord! It was NOT tragic lard cake and if you think I am waxing hyperbolic, remember it was worth a free drink from the restaurant manager after she tasted it.
